Broken Z22 Strap on Seiko SKX-173 Auto Diver

I wear my Seiko auto diver (skx-173) anytime I’m not wearing my Speedmaster.

BTW, the Seiko automatics may be the best price/performance deals in mechanical watches ever. And within that, the diver’s models are the best robust watches going, IMHO.

[I never should have sold this Vostok, looking to buy another.]

This Seiko diver is a good 12 years old I think. Over the weekend I took the bracelet off of it on a whim and put the Z22 strap back on it.

This morning I felt my watch fall off my wrist and into my lap. The Z22 strap (plastic, masquerading as rubber) broke in two places. If I had been swimming or diving there’s a good chance I would have lost the watch. I now see why some people swear by NATO straps. The idea is that there are two straps going around the springbars. So if a springbar breaks the watch won’t fall off.

So right now I’m trying a two piece Zulu strap and a one piece NATO strap.
