Remember this? (pic of George Hussein Busbama via Dr. Munger)
That was from 2009. Not only has he not closed the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Obama has doubled-down on his assault on freedom and civil liberties.
Will his 2008 supporters abandon him at the polls in 2012 over this injustice and lie? I’d love to see it, but don’t count on it. This your beloved Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Oh, and yesterday was Bill of Rights day. And here’s some more on that.
“Let me make this stark. If you vote for Barack Obama, you are an enemy of the magna carte and liberal democracy. Let’s make it clear who is responsible for what appears to be happening with this HORRIFYING Orwellian nightmare bill:
Senator Carl Levin (D) told lawmakers: “the administration asked us to remove the language which says that US citizens and lawful residents would not be subject to this section.”
Translation: Obama wants to burn the bill of rights and have the ability to lock YOU up, send you to Gitmo and throw away the key. No trial. No due process of law. Nothing.
He’s a lying totalitarian criminal, folks. If you vote for him, you’re endorsing this. And remember, the next president will have this same power. Don’t be a useful idiot for a totalitarian regime.”
Glenn Greenwald gets it right, too.
Obama to sign indefinite detention bill into law – Glenn Greenwald – Salon.com: First, while the powers this bill enshrines are indeed radical and dangerous, most of them already exist. That’s because first the Bush administration and now the Obama administration have aggressively argued that the original 2001 AUMF already empowers them to imprison people without charges, use force against even U.S. citizens without due process (Anwar Awlaki), and target not only members of Al Qaeda and the Taliban (as the law states) but also anyone who “substantially supports” those groups and/or “associated forces” (whatever those terms mean).
Thankfully, the ACLU is on the right side of this one.
Behind Closed Doors: Congress Trying to Force Indefinite Detention Bill on Americans – Blog of Rights: Official Blog of the American Civil Liberties Union: No corner of the world, not even your own home, would be off-limits to the military. And there is no exception for American citizens. Section 1031 — one of the indefinite detention provisions — of the Senate-approved version of the NDAA has no limitations whatsoever based on geography, duration or citizenship. And the entire Senate bill was drafted in secret, with no hearing, and with committee votes behind closed doors.
And from Anthony Gregory.
Obama Caves, Agrees He Is All-Powerful – The Beacon: The House has overwhelmingly passed HR 1540, frightening legislation that codifies the president’s totalitarian power to detain militarily terrorist suspects indefinitely without meaningful due process, including U.S. citizens captured on American soil. This legislation has many other horrible war-on-terror provisions, but the solidification of the Bush-Obama claim of imperial prerogative over imprisoning any soul in the world the president chooses has got to be the worst.
And some from Dr. Munger.
Kids Prefer Cheese: President to Sign Indefinite Detention Bill: He is not capable of telling the truth, because he literally cannot tell true statements from falsehoods. His speeches are just applause lines strung together. I give you… George Hussein Busbama!
Is Cindy Sheehan asleep on the job?
I think that if you vote for Obama in 2012 (the same holds true for most of the GOP candidates, as well) you can no longer honestly claim to be a defender of civil liberties, or truth. Oh, and let’s not forget every person in Congress who voted for this.
