Quick Book Review: The Great Railway Bazaar by Paul Theroux

After reading Dark Star Safari I knew I had to go back and at least read Theroux’s The Great Railway Bazaar.

The book is again a travelogue. Theroux describes in great detail his 1975 trip by train only over four months. He begins in England and makes his way all the way through Europe and Asia, ending up in Japan, only to return largely on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Theroux meets and describes some rather colorful characters, and it’s worth keeping the time-frame in mind (1975) when reading the book. Some parts of the world are much different not than they were 35+ years ago. If you like Theroux and/or you enjoy the genre, Theroux’s The Great Railway Bazaar is a must-read. Recommended!  ;-)
